Hanging out alone is not a date for sure. It's not a date if you're friends with a girl and you don't have any feelings for each other. If you think it's a date, it's probably true, but if you don't know if it's a date, it's okay to ask.

Or he fears being in painful one-sided love, so he thinks it is better not to act upon his feelings and maintain distance from you to avoid getting hurt. Why would a guy hesitate to ask you out? If he's not asked you out yet, it might be because he doesn't want you to know just how interested in you he is. He doesn't want to seem too keen or desperate, so he's playing it cool by holding back. He might ignore you when he walks into a room, or take a long time to reply to your messages.

A favorite place for spending time is also a place frequented for entertainment or socializing.

If he is a little insecure or lonely, the feeling he gets when you text him back probably feels amazing ? and so he wants to keep feeling it. This means he's going to keep texting you even if he's not interested in anything more.
