Why is lava so hot?
Lava is hot for two primary reasons: Pressure and radiogenic heating make it very hot deep in the Earth (about 100 km down) where rocks melt to make magma. The rock around the magma is a good insulator so the magma doesn't lose much heat on the way to the surface.
What does cold lava look like?
What is cold lava called? Cold lava flows, also known as lahars, are mud flows consisting of volcanic ash, rocks and other debris. The flows can travel quickly and effectively bulldoze or bury anything in their paths.

We have all watched on TV images of liquid lava rushing down the slopes of a volcano. But all lavas are not liquid; some are more viscous and flow down as honey would do. Other lavas are even thicker, and practically do not flow at all.
Accordingly, what happens when lava hits water?
When the large surface of lava hits deeper water, Volcano Watch says the result can be flash steam that can lead to explosions of varying magnitudes. The explosions can cause fragments of molten rock and volcanic glass, created when the lava rapidly cools, to be launched into the air. Correspondingly, how do you make real lava at home? STEP1 ? Fill your glass just over half full with water and add a good few drops of food colouring. STEP2 ? Pour just less than 1 quarter cup of vegetable oil into the cup. It will soon settle out to form a layer on top! STEP3 ? Sprinkle a good dollop of salt on into your cup to start making your lava!
